About Dagenham
Dagenham was first settled by the Saxons in the 7th century and the old village grew on the site of the Saxon settlement in about 1200 when the Parish church was built.
Modern Dagenham came into being in 1923 when the London County Council built on the rural surroundings thus creating the largest housing estate in the country, and probably the largest in Europe.
The first Dagenham Baptists met in a small hut owned by the local butcher. Later a marquee was purchased and put up on the site of the present church. Dagenham Baptist Church, Chaplin Road was built by the generous efforts of Baptists living in Essex and opened in 1927. Shortly afterwards three other Baptist churches were opened in Dagenham - at Oxlow Lane, Becontree Avenue and Wood Lane.
Our Baptist churches are friendly informal places to visit, where you will be made very welcome.
